It’s rich in history and culture which means it’s not hard to find great date spots at low prices. Most museums are only a few dollars (if not free) and places like Mont Royal are open to the public year round. Not to mention, when winter takes over the city you have the opportunity to do everything from ice skating to cross-country skiing.
Every Monday to Thursday from 6-7, Cat’s Corner offers drop in class for everyone from beginner to advanced. They offer classes for solo jazz, the charleston, blues and balboa. It’s one hour – no blabla – lots of music – good practice and good fun!
If you’d prefer something more relaxed they also host Downtown Stomp dance every Friday! Beginner lessons start at 8:30 pm and their taster lesson at 8:45 pm. They also hold social dancing from 9:30 pm – 1 am, all for $10 (or 15$ with a live band!) No reservation or experience is required!
Not only is Old Port one of the most beautiful parts of the city, it’s also a great place to go ice skating. Day passes start at $7.83 and rentals are available for $10.45.
The Old Port Rink posts about skating conditions daily so you know the best days to lace up and on Thursdays they offer “DJ on Ice” so you can, “...spin, slide, and glide to the sounds of music from a different Montreal DJ every week.”
Love video games? You should probably check out Arcade MTL on Rue St. Denis. It’s the first bar entirely dedicated to arcades and retro video games in Montreal. Entry is $7 and you can explore and play around 20 machines and game consoles. You can also enjoy a microbrewery beer or themed cocktail as you play games like Mortal Kombat II, Donkey Kong or Tetris.
This is one is going to require a little planning since they only offer events one (sometimes twice) a month, but if you’re a fan of show tunes it’s worth it. The Broadway Café is an open mic night that offers performers the opportunity to sing the Broadway repertoire they love accompanied by a professional pianist.
Guests come together and harmonize to the music of Gershwin, Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda and everything in between! They even offer their “Miscast Edition” which invites people to embrace the roles in which you would never be cast (whatever their dream role may be.)
Tickets are $10 online or $12 at the door.
The BIXI bike rental system has taken over Montreal which means you can now cycle through the cities prettiest streets. Montreal is one of the most bike friendly cities in the country so it’s no surprise that it’s also home to some beautiful cycling trails.
The Lachine Canal bike trail will take you along a 15 kilometres path down the St Lawrence. You can start in Old Port and head down to Atwater Market, and eventually reach the Chemin du Musée, in Lachine. Or ride through Parc Jean Drapeau or Mont Royal for a scenic view of the city.
No matter the season, there’s plenty to do on Mont Royal. During the winter you can enjoy a snowshoe excursion and top it off with hot chocolate at the Café des Amis. They also offer skating, cross-country skiing and events for specific holidays like Valentine’s Day.
If you’d rather plan out your own excursion you can climb to the very top of the mountain or take one of the scenic trails. The Chalet is also open from 8 am to 8 pm and showcases works of art by painters like Marc-Aurèle Fortin, Paul-Émile Borduas and Edwin H. Holgate.
